World Bank’s Sh10bn Deal to Light Up Homes

The World Bank has signed a Sh10 billion agreement to boost home electrification in Kenya, a move set to improve energy access for thousands of households.

The funding aims to accelerate Kenya’s rural electrification program, supporting infrastructure expansion, grid connections, and renewable energy solutions. Officials say the project will prioritize underserved communities, helping bridge the electricity gap and promote economic development.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir welcomed the deal, stating, “This initiative aligns with Kenya’s long-term goal of achieving universal electricity access by 2030.” The government has been working closely with international partners to expand the country’s power grid and enhance reliability.

The initiative will focus on installing new power lines, upgrading transformers, and integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Additionally, subsidies and affordable financing models are expected to be introduced to help low-income households connect to the grid.

According to World Bank representatives, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs in the energy sector while ensuring sustainable power distribution. “Reliable electricity is a key driver of economic growth, and this funding will make a significant impact,” a World Bank official noted.

As implementation begins, stakeholders anticipate that the investment will boost Kenya’s electrification efforts, reduce energy poverty, and stimulate economic activities in remote and marginalized regions.
