Unity Test: Why the New Anti-Ruto Bid Faces Old Challenges

New anti-Ruto alliance faces familiar challenges.

Kenya’s political landscape is shifting as opposition leaders and discontented figures within the ruling coalition attempt to form a united front against President William Ruto. However, this emerging anti-Ruto alliance faces familiar challenges that have historically plagued opposition unity in the country.

The Push for a United Opposition

Recent political movements suggest growing dissatisfaction with Ruto’s leadership, particularly concerning economic policies, governance style, and regional representation. Key opposition figures, including Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and other disenchanted politicians, are exploring ways to consolidate efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.

Additionally, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s recent moves—including plans to launch his own political party—signal possible internal cracks within Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). These developments raise questions about whether opposition forces can capitalize on the divisions to challenge Ruto effectively.

Old Challenges Resurface

Despite the push for unity, several obstacles stand in the way:

  1. Historical Divisions: Kenya’s opposition has a long history of fragmentation due to competing interests, personal ambitions, and ethnic-based politics.
  2. Lack of a Clear Leader: While Raila Odinga remains a key figure, other potential contenders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Wiper and Jubilee leaders, have their own political ambitions.
  3. State Influence and Political Strategy: Ruto’s administration is likely to employ strategies to weaken opposition efforts, including political co-optation and targeted appointments.
  4. Public Fatigue and Trust Issues: Many Kenyans are skeptical about opposition unity efforts, having witnessed past failed coalitions that collapsed due to internal conflicts.

With political temperatures rising, the coming months will determine whether this alliance gains momentum or falls victim to Kenya’s familiar cycle of opposition disunity.
