Uganda’s Coffee Marathon Kicks Off This Weekend with $30,000 in Prizes and Star Athletes

The town of Rwashamaire in Ntungamo district is set to host the much-anticipated Coffee Marathon 2025 this weekend, promising a unique blend of athletics, cultural celebration, and coffee industry promotion. Organized by Inspire Africa Group in collaboration with the Government of Uganda, the event aims to spotlight Uganda’s growing coffee value chain while rewarding excellence in long-distance running.

Star Athletes to Lead the Race

Leading the women’s division will be Dorcus Inzikuru, the 2005 World Champion in the 3000m steeplechase, while Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich is confirmed to headline the men’s race. Their participation brings global attention to this inaugural marathon, enhancing its prestige and appeal to both amateur and professional runners.

Over $30,000 in Cash Prizes to Be Won

A total of $30,000 (approx. UGX 116 million) has been allocated in cash prizes, which will be distributed among the top 10 finishers across four racing categories:

  • 5 kilometers
  • 10 kilometers
  • 21 kilometers (half marathon)
  • 42 kilometers (full marathon)

According to Duncan Abigaba, Corporate Affairs Manager at Inspire Africa Group, the prize distribution is designed to reward effort, talent, and commitment. “We are not just organizing a race—we’re creating a platform to appreciate excellence and inspire communities,” Abigaba said.

Coffee and Culture at the Core

While the Coffee Marathon celebrates athletic achievement, its primary mission is to promote Uganda’s potential as a leading player in the global coffee industry. The event aligns with the launch of Africa’s first Coffee Industrial Hub, which will utilize freeze-dry technology to produce high-quality instant coffee, energy drinks, and coffee-based cosmetics.

Incorporating a sports event into this campaign may seem unconventional, but Abigaba explained the rationale: “Sports unite people. By associating Uganda’s celebrated athletes with our coffee initiative, we’re enhancing global visibility and market competitiveness for our coffee products.”

Cultural Tours and Community Involvement

Alongside the marathon, participants and visitors can experience cultural tours and community interactions, adding depth to the event’s impact. The goal is to showcase Uganda not only as a producer of fine coffee but also as a vibrant tourist destination with rich traditions.
