The Kenya Navy successfully concluded its highly anticipated Inter-Units Taekwondo Championship, a two-day sporting event held from 26–27 November 2025 at the Kenya Navy Base (KNB) Mtongwe in Mombasa County. The championship brought together top taekwondo practitioners from across various Navy units, all competing for a chance to qualify for the elite team set to represent the Kenya Navy in the upcoming Bora Cup Championship scheduled for March 2026.
The event was officially flagged off by Brigadier William Kiprotich, who emphasized the importance of competitive sports in strengthening military preparedness and cohesion among service members. In his remarks, Brigadier Kiprotich highlighted that taekwondo goes beyond physical combat, serving as a key discipline that builds focus, self-control, mental agility, and respect qualities that are fundamental within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
“Today’s gathering is more than a sporting event; it is a demonstration of the discipline, strength and unity that define the Kenya Navy,” said Brigadier Kiprotich.
He encouraged all participants to uphold excellence, embrace team spirit, and reinforce the Navy’s culture of professionalism and integrity.
Throughout the championship, competitors engaged in multiple taekwondo categories, including Poomsae (patterns), Kyorugi (sparring), and special demonstration routines. These segments not only tested physical strength but also showcased precision, tactical awareness, and mastery of technique. Judges closely assessed agility, discipline, controlled power and coordination, ensuring that only the finest practitioners advanced.
During the closing ceremony, Colonel Lopeyok Epetet applauded both winners and participants for their exceptional performance and unwavering commitment to the sport. He praised the high level of competition displayed throughout the event, describing it as a reflection of the Kenya Navy’s dedication to maintaining physical fitness and operational readiness.
“Every kick, every punch, and every point earned was a testament to the mental resilience and physical preparedness of our personnel,” Colonel Epetet noted.
He further congratulated the teams for upholding sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect values that remain integral to the Kenya Navy.
The championship served as a critical platform for identifying and nurturing new sporting talent within the service. It also strengthened the Navy’s broader mission of enhancing combat fitness, unity, and morale among sailors. As the selected team prepares for the Bora Cup Championship 2026, the Kenya Navy continues to invest in sporting excellence to reinforce discipline, competitiveness, and operational capability.
