The government of Gabon has taken strong action following the country’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Authorities have suspended the national football team, banned star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and dismissed head coach Thierry Mouyouma.
The announcement was made by Sports Minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula after Gabon lost 3–2 to Ivory Coast on December 31, a result that confirmed the team’s elimination from the tournament.

Disappointing Tournament Performance
Gabon endured a difficult AFCON campaign in Morocco, finishing bottom of their group. The team lost earlier matches against Cameroon and Mozambique, leaving them with no points before their final game.
Although Gabon took a two-goal lead against Ivory Coast in Marrakech, they failed to hold on and conceded three goals. The collapse added to growing frustration among officials and fans.
Minister Mamboula described the team’s overall performance as “disgraceful.” He said the government could not ignore what he called a failure to represent the nation with pride and discipline.
Strong Government Measures Announced
In a public statement, the sports minister confirmed several immediate actions. The government has
“These decisions were taken in response to the Panthers’ disgraceful performance at the Africa Cup of Nations,” Mamboula said.
Aubameyang Responds
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon’s most famous footballer, did not play in the final group match. He had returned to Marseille for treatment on a thigh injury.
Following the announcement, Aubameyang responded by distancing himself from the team’s overall failure.
“I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am,” he said.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona striker has long been a central figure in Gabonese football and has captained the national team in the past.
Coach Mouyouma’s Tenure Ends
Coach Thierry Mouyouma had been in charge for just over two years. His dismissal follows increasing pressure after a series of disappointing results and a lack of progress at major tournaments.
Under his leadership, Gabon struggled to compete consistently against stronger African sides, and the AFCON exit appears to have sealed his fate.
Rare Move in Modern African Football
In the past, it was more common for African governments to suspend national teams or intervene directly after poor results. However, such actions have become less frequent in recent years.
This is largely due to FIFA regulations, which strictly prohibit government interference in football affairs. Countries risk suspension from international competitions if FIFA determines that political leaders have overstepped.
It remains unclear whether FIFA will respond to Gabon’s decision or whether the suspension will be lifted after internal reforms.
Uncertain Future for Gabon Football
For now, Gabon’s national team faces an uncertain future. With the squad suspended and key figures removed, rebuilding trust and stability will take time.
Supporters are divided. Some believe strong action was necessary to demand accountability. Others fear the measures could harm the development of football in the country.
What happens next will depend on how Gabon balances government authority with FIFA’s rules—and whether the country can put its football back on track after a damaging AFCON campaign.
