Regional blocs from Eastern and Southern Africa are evaluating the possibility of deploying forces to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as violence and instability escalate in the region.
The proposal, led by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC), aims to strengthen security and support peacekeeping efforts amid worsening conflict.
“The situation in eastern Congo demands a concerted regional response,” said an SADC official. “We are assessing all possible measures to restore stability and protect civilians.”
The potential deployment follows ongoing clashes between government forces and rebel groups, which have displaced thousands and fueled humanitarian concerns. Previous regional interventions have had mixed results, raising questions about the effectiveness of another military mission.
While discussions continue, regional leaders stress the importance of diplomatic engagement alongside security operations to achieve a lasting resolution to the crisis in eastern Congo.
